Reel covers and Shorts thumbnails: designed for the crop
Instagram crops your cover to 4:5 in the feed and 3:4 on the grid. YouTube Shorts does not accept a custom image at all. Design for both facts.
The cover is the only part of a short video a stranger sees before deciding. It is also the part most likely to be cropped by the platform in a way you did not plan for. Two facts fix most of it.
Fact one: Instagram crops twice
Upload a full 1080×1920 cover and Instagram will show you two smaller versions of it: 4:5 in the feed and 3:4 on the profile grid. Only the centre survives both, which in practice means the central 1080×1080 square. Treat everything outside that square as expendable and the same cover works everywhere.
Fact two: Shorts has no cover upload
- You cannot supply a custom thumbnail image for a Short.
- YouTube takes a frame from the video itself.
- You choose which frame at upload, and cannot change it afterwards.
- So the video has to contain a frame worth being a thumbnail, which is an editing decision, not a design one.
Text rules that survive the shrink
| Element | Working value |
|---|---|
| Words in the cover title | three to five |
| Font size at 1080 width | 48 to 60 pt minimum |
| Contrast | high; soft palettes disappear at grid size |
| Face | one clear emotion beats no face |
| Safe area | central square |
One more thing worth not doing
Do not repeat on the cover what the first caption already says. The reader gets the same sentence twice and learns nothing new in the two seconds you had. Use the cover for the promise and the opening line for the specifics.
How Monty handles it
Monty keeps captions inside the safe area and closes the clip with an end card so the video does not freeze mid-sentence. Choosing the Instagram cover and the Shorts frame stays with you at upload, and the footage gives you something to choose: the edit is built around the face and the speech rather than around transitions.
FAQ
What size should a Reel cover be?
Design at 1080×1920 but keep everything essential inside the central square, because the feed crops to 4:5 and the grid to 3:4.
Can I upload a thumbnail for a YouTube Short?
No. YouTube uses a frame from the video; you pick which frame at upload and cannot change it later.
Can a Reel cover be changed after posting?
In the standard flow, no. Both platforms fix the choice at upload.
How much text fits on a cover?
Three to five words at 48 to 60 pt or larger, high contrast. Covers are seen at icon size.
Do faces really perform better?
Consistently, when the expression is clear. Surprise, intrigue and laughter outperform a text-only cover.

Making Shorts in CapCut: the workflow, and its ceiling
A 9:16 project, auto captions, a caption fix pass, export at 1080x1920 H.264. It works well for a few clips and stops working at daily volume, for measurable reasons.
One take, five posts: repurposing without reshooting
Reposting the same file everywhere reads as a reupload. What actually changes per platform, in what order to build the versions, and what else a single take contains.
