Instagram Reels algorithm 2026: the signals that count
Mosseri named 3 Reels ranking signals: watch time, likes and sends per reach. What each rewards, the April 2026 originality rule, and 4 myths to drop.
The Instagram Reels algorithm in 2026 ranks mainly on three things Instagram has named itself: how long people watch, how many of the people who saw a reel liked it, and how many sent it to someone. On top of that sits an eligibility gate: accounts that mostly re-upload other people's work are not recommended to non-followers at all. Most of what circulates about the algorithm is either a detail of those two points or a guess.
Below, official means Adam Mosseri on the record, Instagram's own announcements or Meta's published system card for Reels. Popular claims without that backing are labelled as myths.
What Instagram has confirmed
“The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends.”
— Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, January 2025, reported by Social Media Today
He added a detail most summaries drop. Likes are slightly more important for connected content, meaning reach among your followers, and sends are slightly more important for unconnected content, meaning reach among people who do not follow you. He also told creators to read these numbers as rates in Insights: average watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach.
Meta's system card for Reels, last updated in November 2025, goes further. It lists nine predictions the ranking system makes for each viewer and the signals behind each one. Several are directly useful to a creator:
- How likely you are to watch less than three seconds, informed by how often the reel was skipped within two seconds and how often people watched at least three seconds of it.
- How long you are likely to watch, informed by the reel's length and how much time people have already spent viewing it.
- How likely you are to reshare it, inside Instagram or off the platform, informed by viewing time and your past reshares.
- How likely you are to follow the author, informed by how many followers the author has already gained through that reel.
- How likely you are to use its audio in a reel of your own.
Signal by signal: what to change in your Reels
| Signal | What it rewards | Practical move |
|---|---|---|
| Early skips | Openings that stop the swipe | Make the first frame readable without sound and state the topic in the first sentence |
| Watch time | Reels that hold attention for as long as they run | Cut the setup and the pauses between sentences; keep only the length the idea needs |
| Likes per reach | Reach among your followers | Give followers something they recognise as yours: a recurring format, a consistent point of view |
| Sends per reach | Reach among non-followers | Build reels around something worth forwarding: a checklist, a specific number, a take a friend needs to hear |
| Follows from the reel | Reels that make a stranger want the next one | End on what comes next and keep the topic consistent, so the profile matches the reel |
| Originality | Eligibility for recommendations at all | Post footage you shot or material you meaningfully changed; keep third-party clips a small minority |
The fastest diagnostic is already in Insights. In 2025 Instagram replaced view rate with skip rate, defined as the percentage of views from people who skipped your reel during the first three seconds, and added a retention graph that shows where viewers leave. Instagram's own reading of that graph: the line always slopes down, and the flatter it is, the more engaged the audience. Check both before changing anything else (see our guide to short video metrics). A high skip rate points at the opening, and the hook generator gives you first lines to test.
The originality gate
On 30 April 2026 Instagram extended its originality rules. Accounts that post mostly unoriginal content in photos, carousels or reels are no longer shown in places where Instagram recommends content. The change does not affect how people see content from accounts they already follow, so a reposting account keeps reaching its followers and loses discovery.
Instagram counts as original what you wholly created or what reflects your own perspective, such as photos or videos you took. The announcement is specific about what does not turn a re-upload into original work: adding a border, a watermark, subtitles or a credit in the caption. An account that has lost eligibility gets it back when most of its recently posted photos, carousels and reels over a 30-day period are original, and its current standing is visible in Account Status.
Instagram's ranking explainer also lists what it makes less visible in Reels: low-resolution or watermarked reels, reels that are muted or contain borders, reels that are majority text, and reels that have already been posted on Instagram. If you cross-post, upload a clean file without another app's watermark.
Test before your followers see it: Trial Reels
Trial Reels are shown to a selection of people who do not follow you. They do not appear in your followers' Feed or Reels tab, and nobody sees them on your profile unless you later choose to share the reel with everyone. The feature is available to creators with at least 1,000 followers and a public account. You switch on the Trial toggle in the Reels composer, and within about a day you see views, likes, comments and shares, compared against your previous trials.
Because sends weigh slightly more for unconnected reach, a trial is the cleanest place to watch them: the audience is non-followers by design. When a version wins, schedule it for a slot that suits your audience's time zone with the best time to post chart.
Myths worth dropping
- Hashtags boost reach. Mosseri said in 2025 that hashtags do not improve visibility and are a way to tell people what a post is about. Since December 2025 Instagram limits a post or reel caption to five hashtags.
- One send is worth a fixed number of likes. Exchange rates between sends and likes circulate widely, but Instagram has published no ratio. Mosseri's wording is that sends are slightly more important for reaching non-followers.
- Crediting the creator makes a repost fine. Under the April 2026 rules a credit in the caption, a border or a watermark does not make someone else's reel original.
- Comments are the top signal. The likelihood of commenting is one of the nine predictions in Meta's system card, but comments are not among the three signals Mosseri named as mattering most.
Where Monty fits
Monty has no special access to the Instagram algorithm. It takes over the production work behind the signals you control: Monty writes the script in your style, you record one take on your phone, and Monty cuts pauses, filler words and bad takes so the reel gets to the point, adds kinetic captions synced to speech, places B-roll cutaways by meaning, and publishes to Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Telegram on a schedule or after your approval. Because the footage is a take you filmed, it is the kind of content Instagram's rules describe as original.
It will not pick the best minutes out of a long recording, and it does not generate footage of you, so the idea worth forwarding and the delivery on camera stay yours. The free plan puts a Monty watermark on the video, which is worth knowing given what Instagram says about watermarked reels; paid plans, starting with Creator at $29 a month, remove it.

FAQ
How does the Instagram Reels algorithm work in 2026?
Instagram ranks Reels on predictions about each viewer, such as whether they will skip, watch, share or follow. Mosseri named watch time, likes and sends as the three signals that matter most, read as rates against reach. Accounts that mostly post unoriginal content are excluded from recommendations.
How do I get more reach on Reels from non-followers?
Mosseri says sends matter slightly more for unconnected reach, so make reels people forward. Keep the skip rate in the first three seconds low, post original footage, and test openings with Trial Reels if you have a public account with at least 1,000 followers.
Do hashtags still help Reels reach?
Mosseri said in 2025 that hashtags do not improve visibility; they help describe what a post is about. Since December 2025 Instagram allows up to five hashtags in a post or reel caption.
Why is my reel not being recommended?
Check Account Status first. Official reasons for reduced or no recommendations include an account posting mostly unoriginal content, and reels that are watermarked, low resolution, muted, bordered or mostly text. Ineligible accounts regain recommendations when most posts over a 30-day period are original.
What is skip rate on Instagram?
The percentage of views from people who skipped your reel during the first three seconds. Instagram added it to Reels Insights in 2025 in place of view rate, alongside a retention graph.
