Telegram Channel Video: Size Limits, Formats, Checklist

Telegram channel video limits in one place: 2 GB files (4 GB with Premium), 1-minute video messages, 50 MB via the Bot API, plus a posting checklist.

Short answer first. A video posted to a Telegram channel can be up to 2 GB, or 4 GB if the account posting it has Telegram Premium. Telegram does not publish a separate length limit for regular videos, so file size is the ceiling. Round video messages stop at one minute. Media captions sent through the Bot API take up to 1,024 characters, and bots on Telegram's cloud Bot API can upload videos of up to 50 MB.

Below is a reference table, a comparison with YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels, the settings that matter when a bot or scheduler does the posting, and a checklist to run before each post.

4 GB
maximum upload with Telegram Premium, which Telegram says is enough for about 4 hours of 1080p video. Everyone else can upload files of up to 2 GB

Two notes on the table. Autoplay is muted, so the opening seconds need to make sense without sound, the same rule as in any vertical feed. And the frame itself is not Telegram-specific: the 9:16 export you already make for other platforms works here, and the social video specs table lists the exact dimensions.

How Telegram compares with Shorts and Reels

Short-video platforms cap duration. Telegram caps bytes. YouTube counts a vertical or square upload of up to three minutes as a Short, a rule in place for videos uploaded since October 15, 2024. Instagram raised the Reels limit to three minutes in January 2025, although at the time it told creators it only recommended Reels of 90 seconds or less to people who don't follow them. A Telegram channel post has neither ceiling: a 20-minute tutorial goes out the same way as a 30-second clip, as long as the file fits.

Telegram channel

  • Capped by file size: 2 GB, or 4 GB with Premium
  • Each post reaches subscribers with a notification
  • View counts include forwarded copies
  • Captions up to 1,024 characters via the Bot API

Shorts and Reels

  • Capped by duration: 3 minutes
  • Recommendations bring in viewers who don't follow you
  • Instagram recommended Reels of 90 seconds or less to non-followers (January 2025)
  • Vertical or square frame
One vertical master file works in all three places. Length rules and distribution differ.

In practice, the Telegram post is where you can afford a longer cut and a proper caption, while the Shorts and Reels versions stay tight. Distribution across networks is a separate topic, covered in the Telegram cross-posting guide; this page stays on the video itself.

Posting through a bot or a scheduler

Most automated posting to Telegram runs on the Bot API, and its limits are lower than the app's. A bot using Telegram's cloud API can send video files of up to 50 MB. If the bot passes Telegram a URL instead of uploading the file, the cap drops to 20 MB. Running a local Bot API server raises uploads to 2,000 MB. So a 70 MB clip that posts fine from your phone can be refused by a scheduler. The sendVideo method also exposes a few parameters worth knowing:

  • cover: a separate cover image for the video in the message, the API counterpart of the cover picker in the app.
  • caption: 0-1,024 characters after formatting is parsed; show_caption_above_media moves the caption above the video.
  • supports_streaming: marks the upload as suitable for streaming. Telegram clients expect MPEG4 video, and other formats may be sent as a document.
  • disable_notification: sends the post silently, so subscribers get a notification with no sound.
  • thumbnail: only the small preview, a JPEG under 200 kB and no wider or taller than 320 px.
  • start_timestamp: starts playback in the message from a chosen second.

Video messages and channel stories

A video message is the round clip you record by holding the camera button in the message bar, the same gesture as a voice note. Telegram introduced them in May 2017. Bots send them with sendVideoNote, which the Bot API describes as a rounded square MPEG4 video of up to one minute, where width and height equal the circle's diameter. In a channel they suit quick personal updates: a reaction to news, a behind-the-scenes note, an answer to a question subscribers keep asking.

Stories are gated. A channel unlocks them through boosts from subscribers with Telegram Premium, each of whom has 4 boosts to assign. Every level the channel reaches adds one more story per day to its allowance. Admins find the boost link under Channel Info, More, Statistics, Boosts. For a channel built around video, a story works best as a teaser that sends people to the full post.

Posting checklist

  1. Export MP4. Telegram clients play MPEG4 video; other formats may arrive as documents.
  2. Check the size against the route: 2 GB from the app, 4 GB with Premium, 50 MB if a bot on the cloud Bot API does the posting.
  3. Choose video or file. Send as a video anything meant to be watched in the channel, and use a file only when subscribers need the original quality.
  4. Set a cover. Since February 2025 you can pick any frame as the cover for videos in channels and add text or stickers in the editor: open the three-dot menu and choose Edit Cover. The guide to reel covers and thumbnails explains what keeps a frame readable at small sizes.
  5. Write the caption for silent viewing. Videos autoplay without sound, so the first line should give a reason to tap. Timestamps such as 1:38 in the caption jump to that moment.
  6. Pick send options. Hold the Send button to schedule the post or send it silently, which delivers a notification with no sound.
  7. Choose the hour. The best time to post map includes Telegram alongside TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Keep two exports if you automate. A 300 MB clip uploads from a phone without complaint, and the same file is over the cloud Bot API's 50 MB limit six times.

After it goes live: views, reactions, comments

  • View counter: every channel post has one, and views of forwarded copies count toward the total.
  • Reactions: admins choose which reaction emoji the channel allows.
  • Comments: link a discussion group in the channel info, and each post gets its own comment thread that also appears in the group.
  • Statistics: detailed graphs of growth and post performance unlock for channels with more than 500 subscribers.

Where Monty fits

Monty handles the regular vertical video. It writes the script in your style, you record one take on your phone or pick a clip from your gallery, and Monty cuts pauses, filler words and bad takes, adds captions synced to speech, places music under the voice with ducking, cleans the audio and masters loudness per platform. The finished video posts to your Telegram channel along with versions for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok, on a schedule or after you approve it.

Video messages and channel stories are easiest to record in the Telegram app itself, since a one-minute update needs no edit. Monty also does not pick the best moments out of a long recording for you: you decide which minutes deserve a clip, and the assembly after that is Monty's. The free plan includes 3 videos a month.

FAQ

What is the video size limit on Telegram?

2 GB per file for everyone and 4 GB for Telegram Premium subscribers. Anyone can download the larger files. Bots on the cloud Bot API are limited to 50 MB per video, or 2,000 MB with a local Bot API server.

How long can a Telegram video message be?

Up to one minute. The Bot API describes a video message as a rounded square MPEG4 video of up to 1 minute, and bots send it with the sendVideoNote method.

How do I post a video on a Telegram channel?

Open the channel, tap the paperclip, choose the video, set a cover in the editor and write a caption, then send. Hold the Send button to schedule the post or send it silently. Send it as a file only when viewers need the original quality.

Why won't my scheduler post a video to Telegram?

Check the file size first. Tools built on Telegram's cloud Bot API cannot upload videos over 50 MB, and files passed by URL are capped at 20 MB. Export a smaller MP4 or use a tool that runs a local Bot API server, which accepts up to 2,000 MB.

Can Telegram channels post stories?

Yes, once they unlock them with boosts from Premium subscribers. Each Premium subscription carries 4 boosts, and each level the channel reaches adds one story per day.
