TikTok algorithm 2026: how the For You feed picks videos

The signals TikTok itself lists, a For You feed eligibility checklist, the 1-minute Creator Rewards rule and the 2025-2026 changes that matter.

The TikTok algorithm in 2026 ranks every video separately for every viewer. TikTok's documentation says it turns viewer signals into a prediction score, the likelihood that you like, share, comment on, finish or skip a video, and that for many users time spent watching a video weighs more than other factors. Follower count is not a direct factor. Before any scoring, a video has to pass moderation and meet the For You feed eligibility standards.

So if your TikTok is not getting views, check eligibility first and retention second. Below, official means TikTok's own Newsroom, Community Guidelines, recommendation system explainer or Creator Academy. Everything else is labelled as a creator observation.

The signals TikTok names

TikTok sorts what it looks at into three groups. The wording below follows its Newsroom post on the For You feed and the longer list in its recommendation system explainer.

Signal groupWhat TikTok listsWhat you control
User interactionsVideos watched, finished, liked, shared, skipped or marked Not interested; comments; accounts followed; searchesWhether people stay to the end and act on the video
Video informationCaptions, sounds, hashtags, length, time posted, the region it was posted from, the author's language settingCaption wording, sound, length and language
Device and account settingsLanguage preference, country or region, device type, operating system, time zoneNothing directly. These shape which viewers are likely to see your video

TikTok's Newsroom post adds that a strong indicator, such as finishing a longer video from beginning to end, outweighs a weak one, and that a history of high-performing videos is not a direct factor either. Variety is enforced on purpose: if top-ranked videos are too alike, for example because they use the same sound, some are swapped out, and your feed generally won't show two videos in a row from the same creator.

How a new video reaches the For You feed

1Upload
2Moderation
3Pool of eligible videos
4Prediction score per viewer
5Similarity check
6For You feed
The order TikTok describes in its recommendation system explainer. A video that fails moderation or eligibility never reaches the scoring step

Official part: every upload goes through automated systems and moderation teams. Violating content is removed, content unsuitable for a broad audience is made ineligible, and only videos that pass enter the pool. Two fixed rules apply along the way: each viewer's feed includes creators from their region, and content from accounts under 16 is not recommended.

Observed part: creators describe the first hours in similar terms, though TikTok publishes nothing about them. Views arrive in bursts, many videos stall after their first audience, and some pick up days later through search or the profile. Treat the first audience as a test group and read what it did:

  • Whether analytics marks the video as ineligible for recommendation. TikTok says restrictions show up there, so rule this out first.
  • Average watch time and completion, the signals TikTok says carry the most weight.
  • Shares, saves and comments relative to views, since the system predicts each one separately.
  • The opening seconds, because skipping is one of the modelled interactions. See what the first three seconds decide and draft alternatives with the hook generator.

For You feed eligibility checklist

TikTok's Community Guidelines label some content "FYF ineligible": it stays on your profile and in search but is not recommended. These rows come from the version that took effect on 24 September 2026.

fewer low-quality uploads among TikTok Shop sellers after a similar pre-check, the result TikTok cited when it launched Content Check Lite

Content Check Lite, announced on 30 July 2025 for TikTok Studio on the web, lets you check whether a video may be eligible for the For You feed before uploading it. After posting, analytics shows whether a video was made ineligible, and the guidelines allow an appeal.

Search, length and the one-minute line

Search ranks differently. TikTok lists relevance to the search, hashtags and sound, and says that for many users relevance to the exact term entered outweighs other factors. A video that misses the For You feed can still be found there, so name the topic in the words people would type.

TikTok lists length as a signal without saying longer ranks better. Money is where it is explicit. The Creator Rewards Program pays only for original videos over 1 minute with at least 1,000 For You feed views, excluding Duets, Stitches and sponsored posts. Creators must be 18 or older, with 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in the last 30 days, based in the US, UK, Germany, Japan, South Korea, France, Mexico or Brazil. A qualified view needs five seconds of watch time, or 30 seconds from search. TikTok.com takes uploads of up to 60 minutes.

What changed in 2025-2026, and myths to drop

Beyond Content Check Lite, two changes matter. On 23 January 2026 TikTok announced the TikTok USDS Joint Venture, which will retrain, test and update the recommendation algorithm on U.S. user data while keeping U.S. creators discoverable globally. And revised Community Guidelines took effect on 24 September 2026, with the For You feed overview and unoriginal content rules worded as before.

  • Follower count decides reach. TikTok says it is not a direct For You factor; it matters for account suggestions.
  • Low views mean a shadowban. TikTok says few views do not necessarily mean a broken rule, and real restrictions show in analytics.
  • The #fyp hashtag unlocks the feed. Hashtags are one signal among many, and no tag is named as a route to eligibility.
  • A credit line makes a repost fine. The rule targets reused material with nothing new added, and a caption credit adds nothing to the video.
  • Joining Creator Rewards changes reach. TikTok's FAQ says it does not affect views, followers or engagement.
If a video gets almost no views, run the eligibility checklist before rewriting anything. If it gets views but people leave early, fix the opening.

Where Monty fits

Monty has no access to TikTok's ranking and cannot make a video eligible. It handles the production behind the signals you control: Monty writes the script in your style, you record one take on your phone, and Monty cuts pauses, filler words and retakes so the point lands early, adds kinetic captions synced to speech, places music under the voice, cleans the audio and publishes to TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and Telegram on a schedule or after your approval. Pick the slot with the best time to post tool and the rhythm with how often to post.

Monty edits footage you recorded yourself. It does not pick the best minutes from a long recording or generate footage of you, so the idea and delivery stay yours. The Free plan adds a Monty watermark; paid plans from Creator at $29 a month do not. Videos run up to 3 minutes on Free and Creator and 5 on Pro, enough for the over-one-minute Creator Rewards format.

FAQ

How does the TikTok algorithm work in 2026?

TikTok scores each eligible video for each viewer by predicting interactions such as likes, shares, comments, finishes and skips. For many users watch time on a video carries the most weight. Videos first have to pass moderation and the For You feed eligibility standards.

Why is my TikTok not getting views?

Check analytics for an ineligibility notice first: reposted clips without creative edits, GIF-only clips, like-for-like requests and unverified crisis claims are all excluded from recommendations. If nothing is flagged, look at how early viewers leave and rework the opening.

Does follower count affect the For You feed?

TikTok says follower count and previous high-performing videos are not direct factors in For You recommendations. Follower numbers do feed into account suggestions and the LIVE feed.

How long do TikTok videos need to be for Creator Rewards?

Over 1 minute, original, with at least 1,000 For You feed views. The account needs 10,000 followers, 100,000 views in the last 30 days, an owner aged 18 or older and a base in one of eight eligible countries.

Can I check For You feed eligibility before posting?

Yes. Content Check Lite in TikTok Studio on the web checks a video against the For You feed eligibility standards before upload, so you can edit it first. After posting, analytics shows whether a video was made ineligible.
