Hormozi-Style Captions: How to Make Animated Captions

Hormozi-style captions broken down: 1-3 words, heavy uppercase type, one accent word. 5 caption styles compared, plus steps in CapCut, Premiere, Resolve.

Hormozi-style captions are short bursts of on-screen text that follow the speaker word by word: a few words at a time, uppercase, a heavy sans-serif, white fill with a shadow or stroke, and one keyword per phrase in an accent color. Each chunk pops in as it is spoken and sits in the lower-middle of the frame, clear of the app's buttons and description. Submagic's breakdown of Alex Hormozi's videos traces the font from TheBoldFont in older clips to Anton in newer ones, with a yellow stroke and a pop-in from the bottom.

To make them: generate automatic captions, fix the transcript, cut lines into chunks of one to three words, apply a word-highlight or pop preset, recolor the one word that carries each phrase, and check placement on a phone. CapCut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve 20 and Submagic all get there. The difference is how much of the keyword work stays manual.

78.6%
of 13.5 million clips processed by OpusClip in January-March 2026 used animated captions. Static captions appeared in about 1.6%

Anatomy of the style

Each element solves one reading problem on a small screen.

  • Chunk size. One to three words on screen at a time, four to six at most across two lines. A short chunk is read at a glance.
  • Type. A heavy, often condensed sans-serif in uppercase. Heavy strokes survive a busy background. Choosing the face is covered in our subtitle font guide.
  • Contrast. White fill plus a drop shadow or dark stroke. Submagic's CapCut recipe for the older Hormozi look sets the shadow to 100% opacity, 70% blur and 14% distance.
  • One accent word per phrase. The word that carries the meaning changes color and sometimes grows slightly.
  • Motion synced to speech. Each chunk appears as its first word is spoken, with a short pop or scale-in that finishes before the next word lands.
  • Position. Lower-middle of the frame, above the band each app covers with the description and buttons. Exact margins per platform are in vertical video safe zones.

Five caption styles and when each fits

Hormozi-style is one point on a range. CapCut's own guide to caption types separates standard subtitles, highlight captions, word-by-word sync, minimal captions and uppercase impact captions, and each suits a different kind of video.

StyleOn screenFitsFails when
Static lineFull phrase, sentence case, no motionDense tutorials, calm or premium brandsThe speaker is fast and lines change quicker than people read
Karaoke highlightThe full line stays, the spoken word changes colorTalking heads, explainers, language contentLines run long and the highlight races across a block of text
Word popOne to three words appear with a quick scale-inHooks, opinions, list videosSlow or emotional delivery, where constant motion feels jumpy
Hormozi-styleUppercase heavy type, one accent word, pop-in, occasional emojiBusiness and education advice, punchy talking headsAesthetic, lifestyle or luxury content that needs quiet type
Minimal lower thirdSmall sentence-case text, low contrast, little motionCinematic vlogs, mood pieces where visuals carry the storyViewers watch muted and the words carry the meaning
Pick by delivery speed and by how much of the meaning lives in the words. The faster and more word-heavy the video, the shorter the chunks should be.

What the data says, and where it stops

Adoption is clear. OpusClip analyzed 13.5 million clips processed by its engine between January and March 2026: 80.2% used captions, 78.6% used animated captions and about 1.6% used static ones. Of 9.79 million captioned clips, 9.59 million were animated, roughly 98 in every 100. These clips come from a tool built around animated captions, so the figure shows what creators ship and says nothing about retention.

Controlled evidence on highlight styles is thin. In 2023 Fiona Draxler and colleagues showed 49 language learners 2-3 minute movie clips with four caption designs: standard captions, keyword highlights, keyword highlights synced to speech, and synced keywords alone. Standard captions ranked first for comprehension and entertainment. Synced highlights ranked first for learning, but participants found them too distracting to replace standard captions in everyday viewing. Keywords-only captions scored lowest on perceived comprehension.

Standard captions6points of 6
Keyword highlights5points of 6
Synced keyword highlights5points of 6
Synced keywords only2points of 6
Median perceived comprehension on a 6-point scale, 49 language learners watching English movie clips (Draxler et al., 2023). A different audience and format from Reels, so read it as a direction.

Two rules follow. Keep the full spoken phrase on screen, because stripping captions down to keywords cost the most comprehension in the study. And keep the highlight as a single accent, since the highlight is the element viewers called distracting.

How to make them in CapCut, Premiere, Resolve and Submagic

Start the same way everywhere: transcribe, then read the transcript before styling. A typo in quiet white text slips by; the same typo popping in yellow uppercase gets noticed. Where speech recognition tends to slip is covered in auto captions for Reels.

  • CapCut. On desktop, open Text, then Auto captions, pick the spoken language and generate. In CapCut Web the AI captions tool puts the transcript in a Subtitles tab and presets in a Styles panel. Preset names differ between versions, so preview one caption before applying a style to all, then color keywords by hand.
  • Premiere Pro. Version 26.3, released in June 2026, lets you choose Single Word when creating captions from a transcript, and Premiere syncs each word to the audio. Styling sits in Essential Graphics, and Submagic's Premiere method still colors keywords by hand, with a 15-character maximum per caption.
  • DaVinci Resolve 20. Timeline, AI Tools, Create Subtitles from Audio. Then open Effects, Toolbox, Titles, Animated and drag Word Highlight (or Lollipop, Rotate, Slide In, Statement) onto the subtitle track header. Speed, font and colors are in the Inspector. Larry Jordan notes that almost all AI-powered features in Resolve require the paid Studio version.
  • Submagic. Upload, generate captions, then adjust colors, animations and timing on a template. It is built around exactly this look, and Submagic's own walkthrough puts the whole process at about two minutes.

When the style turns into noise

  • An accent on every word turns the highlight into flicker.
  • Two or three accent colors in one video, or a new color every week. Recognition needs the same signal every time.
  • An emoji after each chunk. One at a punchline lands as a beat; ten in a row read as clutter.
  • Motion that outlasts the word. If the bounce is still settling when the next chunk arrives, the text lags behind the voice.
  • Captions over the face or the product. Move the caption band, or frame the shot with room for it.
  • Videos where tone matters more than tempo: grief, luxury, slow storytelling. A minimal line suits them better.

Before posting, watch the export muted on a phone and check the caption band against each app's interface with the safe zone checker. A laptop preview shows none of that overlay.

Where Monty fits

Monty produces this kind of caption as part of the edit. You record one take on your phone; Monty cuts pauses and filler words, adds kinetic captions synced to speech in a caption style matched to your brand, and publishes versions cut and captioned for YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok and Telegram. Brand Brain learns your style from your existing content, so the look carries from one video to the next, and subtitles in other languages are available when you need them.

Monty is not a manual timeline editor. For a hand-keyed animation on a single word in one hero video, Premiere or Resolve is the better tool. The Free plan covers 3 videos a month up to 3 minutes with a watermark, enough to compare Monty's captions against your current workflow.

FAQ

What font does Alex Hormozi use for captions?

Submagic's breakdown identifies TheBoldFont in his older videos and Anton in the newer style, both uppercase with a shadow. The newer look adds a yellow stroke and a pop-in from the bottom. Montserrat in Black or ExtraBold is a free alternative with a wider letter.

How many words should be on screen in animated captions?

One to three at a time is the usual setting for Reels, TikTok and Shorts. Submagic's Hormozi recipe caps it at 4-6 words across two lines, and its Premiere method limits each caption to 15 characters. Fast speakers need the shorter end of that range.

Do animated captions get better retention than static ones?

They are the norm: 78.6% of 13.5 million clips in OpusClip's January-March 2026 data used animated captions, against about 1.6% static. No public controlled test shows one style winning on retention. A 2023 study with 49 viewers found synced keyword highlights too distracting for everyday viewing, so keep motion and accents restrained.

How do I make karaoke captions where the spoken word lights up?

Use a word-highlight preset. In DaVinci Resolve 20 it is the Word Highlight animated subtitle, in CapCut it sits among the caption style presets, and Premiere Pro 26.3 single-word captions give you per-word timing to style. Keep the full line on screen and change only the color of the active word.
