YouTube Shorts algorithm 2026: signals, views and fixes

What the Shorts feed measures, how views and engaged views are counted after 24 August 2026, and a 7-row table for diagnosing Shorts that stall.

The YouTube Shorts algorithm ranks each Short separately for each viewer. According to YouTube's help centre, the system looks at whether people shown a Short choose to watch it, ignore it or tap "not interested", then at the share of viewers who chose to view, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes and post-watch survey results. Personal history is weighed too: the Shorts and channels a viewer enjoyed before, the topics they watch and the trending sounds they engage with.

The counting around it changed too. Since 31 March 2025 a Shorts view counts on every play or replay, since 24 August 2026 so does every format, and payment stayed on engaged views. If views look healthy while reach or revenue do not, start with the diagnostic table below.

The signals YouTube actually names

  • Choice: of the viewers shown the Short, how many watched instead of ignoring it or tapping "not interested".
  • Duration: average view duration and average percentage viewed. A 20-second Short watched to the end reports 100%; a 3-minute Short abandoned halfway reports 50%.
  • Satisfaction: likes and post-watch survey answers.
  • Relevance: the viewer's history with your Shorts or channel, their topics, and trending audio they engage with.
  • Context you do not control: global interest in the topic, competition from other channels, and seasonality.

Placement shifts the rules slightly. The Subs tab shows the newest Shorts from subscribed channels, and Search ranks on how well your metadata matches the query, so a literal title helps most there.

The same help page settles two common arguments. There is no minimum posting cadence required for Shorts to perform well, and Shorts performance does not negatively impact long-form recommendations on the same channel.

Views, engaged views and qualified views

The public number now measures starts. On 31 March 2025 YouTube began counting a Shorts view whenever playback starts or replays, citing creators who post across several platforms. The earlier metric survives as engaged views. On 24 August 2026 first-frame counting reached all formats, with payment still on engaged views.

MetricWhat it countsWhat it is used for
ViewsEvery play or replay from the first frame, no minimum watch time. Shorts since 31 March 2025, all formats since 24 August 2026The public counter and reach comparisons with other platforms
Engaged viewsPlays where the viewer continued watching after the initial momentDividing Shorts ad revenue in the Creator Pool
Qualified Shorts viewsThe Shorts views YouTube accepts toward Partner Program thresholdsJoining YPP (10 million in 90 days today, 20 million for new applicants from 1 February 2027) and, from that date, keeping Shorts revenue with 10 million every 90 days

The practical consequence is about comparison. When the counter jumps after either date, check engaged views for the same period before calling it growth, and read the share of viewers who chose to view alongside it. Our guide to short video metrics covers which numbers deserve attention and which only look important.

The test pool: what is official and what is observation

Creators widely describe a test pool: a new Short gets a small first batch of impressions, and how that batch reacts decides whether it spreads or stalls. Some also report Shorts that sit flat for days and then pick up. Treat both as observations drawn from creators' own analytics. YouTube has not published a pool size, a fixed test stage or a deadline.

YouTube describes different mechanics. In a Creator Insider interview published on 1 September 2026, Todd Beaupré, senior director of growth and discovery, said recommendations across YouTube are pulled for each viewer at session time, with nothing dispatched to an audience when a video goes live. As PPC Land reports it, the system learns separately for different audiences, and some videos gather most of their audience a month or more after publication.

YouTube has stated

  • Ranking is per viewer
  • Watching, ignoring and "not interested" are measured
  • Audiences are learned separately
  • Some videos find most viewers a month or more later

Creators observe

  • A small first batch of impressions
  • Then a widening or a stall
  • Flat Shorts reviving days later
  • No published pool size or deadline
Treat the first hour as a sample and judge a Short over days and weeks

In practice: do not delete a Short after its first hour, and compare each Short with your own median over the same number of days since upload.

Why your Shorts are not getting views: a diagnostic table

Causes in the first three rows are inference from YouTube's stated signals; the rest are YouTube's documented rules.

Money, music and the originality line

Shorts revenue sharing works in two steps. Ad revenue from the Shorts Feed is pooled each month, and the part associated with Shorts that use music is split with music licensing: half for a Short with one track, two thirds for a Short with two. The Creator Pool is then divided among monetising creators by their share of engaged views in each country, and creators keep 45% of their allocation whether or not they used music.

Short templates are easy to repeat, which makes the originality rule easy to break. On 15 July 2025 YouTube renamed its repetitious content policy to inauthentic content, covering repetitive or mass-produced material. Examples include AI-generated content made with generic templates that gives the impression of mass production, and similar content with minimal variation.

  1. Compare engaged views week over week; ignore the step in raw views around 24 August 2026.
  2. Check the share who chose to view before looking at duration.
  3. Rewatch the openings of the three Shorts with the lowest average percentage viewed.
  4. Hold a schedule you can sustain; how often to post covers realistic numbers.
  5. Start upload times from the best time to post tool, then check your own audience data.

Where Monty fits

Monty handles the parts of this list on your side of the screen. Monty writes the script in your style, you record one take on a phone, and Monty cuts pauses, umms and bad takes, adds kinetic captions synced to speech, masters loudness per platform and publishes to YouTube Shorts on a schedule or after your approval. Brand Brain learns your hooks, humour and rhythm, and what appears on camera is always you.

It does not control ranking, competition or how a first audience responds, and it will not choose which minutes of a long recording deserve a Short. Publishing covers YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, TikTok and Telegram. The Free plan includes 3 videos a month up to 3 minutes, which matches the Shorts length limit; Creator at $29 a month gives 15 videos, no watermark and the scheduler.

FAQ

How does the YouTube Shorts algorithm work in 2026?

It ranks Shorts per viewer by performance and relevance. YouTube names the share of viewers who chose to view, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes, post-watch surveys and "not interested" taps, plus the viewer's history with your channel, topics and sounds.

Why are my YouTube Shorts not getting views?

Most often viewers swipe past in the first moments, few people watch the topic, or other Shorts are winning the same viewers. For Shorts over one minute, check copyright claims first: any active claim on a Short over a minute blocks it globally.

Do Shorts hurt long-form videos on the same channel?

YouTube's help centre says Shorts performance does not negatively impact long-form recommendations. To move Shorts viewers to long videos, attach a Related video in YouTube Studio that matches what the Short promised.

How long can a YouTube Short be?

Up to three minutes for square or vertical videos uploaded after 15 October 2024. A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked, and Audio Library tracks can run up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short.

How many views do you need to monetize YouTube Shorts?

Today, 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million Shorts views in 90 days to join YPP. From 1 February 2027 new applicants need 20 million, and every channel needs 10 million qualified Shorts views in the trailing 90 days to keep earning Shorts revenue each month.
